Walls of this structure are approximately 18 inches thick and were filled with sawdust for proper insulation during the summer heat and winter cold. The primary use of this building was to store ice throughout the seasons before the innovation of refrigeration. This structure was built into the side of the hill with a root cellar in the bottom to store vegetables, fruit, nuts, and other foods. It kept foods from freezing during the winter while keeping food cool during the summer months in order to prevent spoilage. In later years, the ice house was used for a variety of different purposes, including as a workshop/office.
