William Elbert Munsey was born a few mileseast in the mountains of Giles (present-day Bland)County on 13 July 1833. Despite little formalschooling, Munsey possessed an insatiableappetite for knowledge. He entered the ministryof the Methodist Church in 1855, preachedhis first sermon near here, and extended hisministry to several states. Regarded by manywho heard him as the greatest Methodistpreacher of his day, Munsey was poetic bynature, and his unrivaled word pictures heldlarge audiences spellbound. His kindnessextended to giving his own shoes and coat toa Confederate soldier who had none. Munseydied on 23 Oct. 1877.
