Cheatham's Division

—Polk's Corps —

Jackson's Brigade
Cheatham's Division - Polk's Corps
Brigader General John K. Jackson
September 19, 1863, 1 P.M, 2d Position.

1st Georgia (Confederate) 2nd Battalion, - Major James C. Gordon.
5th Georgia - Colonel Charles P. Daniel.
2nd Georgia Battalion, Sharpshooters - Major Richard H. Whiteley.
5th Mississippi - Lieutenant Colonel W.L. Sykes.
5th Mississippi - Major John B. Herring.
8th Mississippi - Colonel John C. Wilkinson.
Scogin's (Georgia) Battery - Captain John Scogin.

This Brigade, being the right of Cheatham's Division, formed about noon in the vicinity of the Winfrey House and advanced toward this position, having Smith's Brigade on its left. It soon encountered Croxton's Brigade of Brannan's Division advancing, and after considerable fighting forced it back beyond the position of this tablet where Croxton was relieved by the troops on the left of Johnson's Division which was then advancing from the Kelly field. Jackson was attacked on this line about 1 p.m. by Baldwin's and Willich's Brigades of Johnson's Division. After two hours' severe fighting Maney's Brigade was brought forward to relieve Jackson. The latter then withdrew to behind the high ground back of Winfrey's to which position Maney was soon forced back, the Union

line pressing forward to the Winfrey House and establishing itself there.
