Sainte-Flavie, “Porte de la Gaspésie"
Un patrimoine à conserver
Dans le langage courant du XIXe siècle, on l'appelait aussi « hangar à grains ». L'état actuel des recherches historiques ne permet pas d'établir avec précision le moment de la construction de la grange à dîme de Sainte-Flavie. On peut malgré tout estimer sa construction aux environs de 1857. Mais qu'est-ce que la dîme ? Il s'agissait d'un impôt que les pariossiens payaient à l'Église en nature. Celui-ci avait pour but de soustraire les curés du travail de la terre. Les paysans lui donnaient alors une partie de leur récolte. La grange à dîme servait donc à entreposer les grains et patates reçus. À Sainte-Flavie, la dîme a été perçue jusque dans les années 1940. Par la suite, la grange a servi de garage et d'entrepôt.
Au plan architectural, on constate d'emblée qu'il s'agit d'une construction modeste. Celle-ci a été érigée entièrement en bois. À l'époque, les murs extérieurs étaient recouverts de planches à feuillures, matériau disponible en abondance dans la région. À l'intérieur, on remarque les grandes poutres de bois équarri qui composent la structure.
Soucieux de la conservation
du patrimoine, le conseil municipal compte bien préserver le bâtiment puisqu'il en est aujourd'hui le propriétaire. D'autant plus que la plupart des granges à dîme du Québec sont disparues du paysage. En effet, nombreuses sont celles qui ont été démolies ou qui ont été la proie des flammes. À la suite d'une restauration minutieuse, le petit bâtiment abritera un centre d'interprétation de la dîme et un musée de la paléontologie. La grange qui se caractérise tant par son architecture particulière que par sa rareté se trouve ainsi protégée pour les années à venir.

A heritage to keep
In common nineteenth century parlance, it was also called the "grain shed." The current state of historical research does not make it possible to establish precisely the time of construction of the Sainte-Flavie tithe barn, but estimates place its construction around 1857. But what was tithing? It was an in-kind tax that parishioners paid to the church. It was intended to remove priests from working the land since farmers gave the priests part of their harvest. The tithe barn was used to store the donated grain and potatoes. In Sainte-Flavie, the tithe was collected until the 1940s. Subsequently, the barn served as a garage and warehouse.
Architecturally, from the outset the barn was of modest construction. This one was built entirely in wood. At the time, the outer walls were covered with rabbet planks, an abundant material available in the area. Inside, there are large squared wooden beams that make up the frame.
Concerned about heritage conservation, the city council intended to preserve the building since it had become its owner, especially since most of the tithe barns in Quebec have disappeared from the landscape; many have been demolished or fell prey to the flames. Following a careful restoration, the small building will house a tithing interpretation center and a museum of paleontology. The barn, which is characterized by both its particular architecture and its rarity, is thus protected for years to come.
