Leonard D. Jungwirth (American, 1903-1963)

MSU faculty member, Department of Art, 1940-1963

Original terra cotta sculpture, 1945

Bronze cast from original, 2005

Dedicated on October 8, 2005

In 1926 George S. Alderton, sports editor for the Lansing State Journal, and Dale Stafford, sportswriter for the Lansing Capitol News, disavowed "The Michigan Staters" as the institution's team name. They selected the "Spartans," a name submitted by Perry J. Fremont a former Michigan State athlete.
