King's Brigade

— Baird's Division —

Battery H, 5th U. S. Artillery.
4 Napoleons, 2 Parrotts.
King's Brigade, Baird's Division, Thomas' Corps.
September 19, 1863.
1st Lieutenant Howard M. Burnham, Commanding (Killed).
2d Lieutenant Joshua A. Fessenden (Wounded Slightly).
2d Lieutenant Israel Ludlow (Wounded).

After an all night's march, September 18, from the vicinity of Bird's mill on Chickamauga via Crawfish Spring and Widow Glenn's the Battery arrived at Kelly's House and took position in line of battle soon after daybreak. About nine o'clock the advance was ordered in an easterly direction and after driving the enemy for a considerable distance, the Brigade was ordered by General Baird to form a new front at right angles with the other, facing south.

The Battery was hardly in position before the troops on the right giving away in confusion, it was exposed to a most terrific fire of musketry from
the front and flank. At the first fire Lieutenant Burnham was killed and Lieutenants Ludlow and Fessenden both wounded. The officers and men remained with their pieces firing until they were forcibly taken from them by the enemy. The Battery was quickly recaptured by the 9th Ohio of Brannan's Division.

Casualties: officers killed 1, officers wounded 2, enlisted men killed 12, enlisted

men wounded 16, enlisted men missing 13; horses killed 45; horses wounded 20; caissons abandoned 6. Not engaged on the 20th.
