After an all night's march from the vicinity of Bird's Mill on the Chickamauga, via Crawford Spring and Widow Glenn's, the Battery arrived at Kelly's cross-roads at daybreak and took position in line of battle. After taking several positions without firing, the Battery came into action on this ground as its fourth position. The enemy (Govan's and Walthall's Brigades) was rapidly approaching from front and flank and two regiments and the Battery came into position facing south, under fire and at right angles to the balance of the Brigade. Four guns were between the two regiments, and one section on the extreme right. After it had fired 64 rounds of canister and percussion shell the enemy rushed on the Battery, overwhelmed the support and captured five guns at the point of the bayonet. The battery was an object of contention for several hours between other commands, three of these guns were subsequently recaptured. Lieutenant Van Pelt and five men were killed, seven wounded and 12 captured.
