William "Bill" Garrett (1929-1974) was on the Shelbyville, IN High School basketball team when they won the 1947 state championship and was named Indiana's Mr. Basketball. He attended IUB 1947-1951; was the first African-American basketball player in the Big Ten. He was named All-American in 1951. Garrett played with the Harlem Globetrotters, taught at Crispus Attucks High School, coached the basketball team, and was named Indiana Coach of the Year for 1959. He was Assistant Dean for Student Services at IUPUI from 1973 until his death in 1974.
