Historic Treasures

During the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt initiated federal programs aimed at putting people back to work. One of these programs was the Works Progress Administration (WPA), which focused on building bridges, roads, and public parks.

When WPA projects were being considered for the park, the Lindbergh family requested that the area be kept as natural as possible.

The WPA projects in the park were done in a rustic style and used local materials like logs and stone. This fit with the desired natural character of the newly established park. Today, the WPA buildings are designated as a National Historic District and they remain an important park of the park's cultural heritage.
