Began as Spanish relay post. Was known prior to 1824 as Elysian Fields, or Amite Courthouse. Chartered in 1880. After 1884, new town, springing upon railroad, gradually absorbed old site.

Nearby is the site of the original log cabin church established in 1811 by Matthew Bowman. Wm. Winans, circuit rider and leader in Miss. Methodism served as pastor, and in 1815, married Martha DuBose.
