The Franklin Tree (Franklinia Altamaha)was discovered by John Bartram, thefirst Native American Botanist, onOctober 1, 1765.It was located about18 miles south of here in the swamplands of the Altamaha River.This treewas named after Benjamin Franklin andbecame famous as the Lost FrankliniaA member of the Camella family, this flowering tree was last seen growingwild in 1790. A specimen, transplantedto Bartram's garden in Philadelphia, Pa.survived and became the ancestors ofthe present cultivated plants
