Who on 8th July 1876,gave his life that thecivilization builded by hisfathers might be preservedfor their childrenschildren unimpaired.

In youths clad mourning theunfinished years of manhoodstretching before him, withclear knowledge and courageouswillingness, he accepted death and foundforever the grateful remembranceof all who know highand generous service in themaintaining of those civicand social institutions whichthe men and women of hisrace and struggled throughthe centuries to establishin South Carolina.
