The 3-Inch Mark 33 is a twin dual-purpose drive mount on a carriage base ring structure used with selective remote or local control. The Gun is primarily designed for defense against enemy aircraft and was installed on combat ships. Each gun is capable of firing 50 rounds of ammunition per minute. This gun was removed from the USS Guam (LPH-9), an amphibious assault helicopter carrier serving in the Caribbean Theater. On August 2, 1966, the USS Guam left the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and prepared for service as the primary recovery ship for the Gemini II Space Flight. On September 18, at 0959 EST, the USS Guam recovered Astronauts Pete Conrad and Dick Gordon 710 miles east of Cape Kennedy Florida after a successful mission in space.
