On this site stood the home of Dr. James Gettys McGready Ramsey, physician, civic leader, statesman and author of the Annals of Tennessee, who lived here from 1872 until his death in 1884. It was named for Dr. Ramsey's first home, Mecklenburg, at the junction of the French Broad and Holston rivers, which was destroyed by fire during the Federal occupation of the region.
