Baltimore Black History

In the pages of The Afro-American newspaper and beyond, the Murphy family fought for civil rights for over a century. In 1892, John Henry Murphy, a Union Army Veteran, combined newsletters from three black churches to form a modern newspaper. The Afro achieved lasting national prominence under his son, Carl Murphy, who built the paper into a powerful, persistent force for civil rights, After Carl's death in 1967, a new generation stepped up to lead the paper.
