Camp Benning began on Macon Road in
1918 as a temporary World War I
encampment. The present fort was
created in 1922 and was named in
honor of Columbus lawyer, legislator,
jurist, and Confederate Major General
Henry L. Benning. The fort has grown
to nearly 200,000 acres and is the
world's largest infantry training
center. The history of the fort and
the infantry branch is chronicled
on the post at the National
Infantry Museum.
