Born a slave in South Carolina,
Horace King moved to this region
with his master, John Godwin, who
secured the contract for the first
bridge across the river. King
supervised the building of this span
in 1833. Freed in 1846, King was a
successful contractor who erected
wooden grist and textile mills and
numerous bridges in three states.
King served in the Alabama
Legislature from 1869 through 1872.
