"With admirable celebrity the pioneers (trail blazers) opened up the roads and Capt. Duryea brought up the division artillery and within fifteen minutes after driving him (Confederate skirmishers) in, our batteries were answering his guns from two commanding points, which positions were retained until the surrender."—Colonel Halbert E. Paine,Union Brigade CommanderDuring the May 27 assault, this ridge was the site of Union siege Battery No. 6. It was occupied by Battery F, 1st U.S. Artillery Regiment, under command of Captain Richard C. Duryea. Duryea's unit consisted of six 12=pounder Napoleon guns that fired on Confederate cannons located at Fort Desperate and Commissary Hill.
