Overall Record: 9-3 | SEC Record: 5-1Head Coach Bill ArnspargerThe 1986 season got off to a flying start for LSU with an upset of Texas A&M before a shocking loss to Miami of Ohio. After that temporary setback, LSU began to roll behind freshman QB Tommy Hodson, defeating Florida, Georgia and Kentucky in consecutive weeks. Ole Miss knocked the Tigers out of first place in the SEC, but LSU rebounded to edge Alabama at Tuscaloosa, leaving the Tigers on the doorstep of its first league crown since 1970. The Tigers mauled Mississippi State to win at least a share of the league title then defeated Notre Dame and Tulane to close the season. When Auburn beat Alabama in the Iron Bowl, LSU claimed the outright SEC championship.
