Inscription
Daniel Cresap, pioneer settler, gave his name to Dan's Mountain and Dan's Rock. Born in 1728 near Havre de Grace, MD., son of Colonel Thomas Cresap. Fought in French and Indian War. By first wife, unknown, had one son; by second wife, Ruth Swearingen, daughter of Maryland Van Swearingen, had ten children. Member Ohio Company; commissioner in founding of Cumberland, 1787. With vast land holdings along Potomac was patriarch of the region. Known proverbially as the poor man's friend. Died in 1798 at his home in Rawlings.

Erected in 1987 by the Cresap Society. Mrs. S. A. Lewis, Pres. Edward O. Cresap, Jr., V. Pres. Orville Cresap Shirey, V. Pres. R. Cresap Davis, Historian. Bernarr Cresap, Sec-Treas. Jeffry A. Harris, Ass't Sec.-Treas.
