The bathroom of earlier days was not much like the bathrooms of today. With no indoor plumbing, most privies or outhouses were holes in the ground with sheds and seats over them and were located several feet from the main home. When the hole filled, the structure was moved to a new site where a new hold was dug. The old holes were filled in, often with junk or trash.
(A beautifully restored privy, and the "treasures" used to fill it up after it was no longer in use, can be seen at the Dougherty Home in Old Mission.)
