Quadricentennial Plaza

—Jamestown Settlement —

One of the thirteen original colonies

Capital-Harrisburg

Although Captain John Smith entered the Susquehanna River in 1608 and Henry Hudson entered Delaware Bay in 1609, the region was not explored extensively until Cornelius Hendricksen came in 1616 and Cornelius Jacobsen came in 1623, both for the Dutch. The Swedes claimed the region of the Delaware River after 1638 and held it until the Dutch took control of the territory in 1655. The English gained control in 1664 and King Charles II granted most of Pennsylvania to William Penn, a Quaker, in 1681. Because of its guarantee of religious freedom, the English colony drew many immigrants.

1616-Explored by Cornelius Hendricksen for the Dutch 1643-Permanently settled by the Swedes 1787-Admitted to the Union as the 2nd state.
