This tablet marks the site of General Edward Braddock's eighteenth encampment called Monacatootha Camp from an unhappy incident on the march. Monacatooha's son was shot by accident by Braddock's own men. General Braddock as soon as the army camped sent for the Indians, condoled with them, made them presents and buried the warrior's son with military honors. Here Braddock's army camped July 6, 1755. The next encampment was at Circleville.
This tablet was erected to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of George Washington by the school children of Sewickley Township November 23, 1932.

I Saw The Marker

My GPS found this marker when I searched for parks local to Irwin PA. It is by the side of the road, in someone's yard. The maps say "Reservoir Road" but the street signs say "General Braddock Rd." It tells an interesting story, which I haven't been able to find out more about (yet).

  1. This reference says Scarouady was with Braddock in 1755 and mentions the incident with his son, saying Braddock presided at his funeral. http://fiwar.wikidot.com/scaroudy

  2. Monacatootha was also called Scarouady, according to a Wikipedia article which says he was a member of the Braddock expedition in 1754. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarouady

  3. According to the Wikipedia page on Monaca, Pennsylvania (named for Monacatootha): Monacatootha (which means "Great Arrow") was an Oneida warrior chief, and a representative of the Iroquois Confederacy with the authority to supervise affairs among the Delawares and Shawnees in that area. Monacathootha had met with future U.S. President George Washington in Logstown. He was a strong friend of the English and campaigned against the French.
