Laufey Jakobsdóttir, "the grandmother of Grjótaþorp (Grjóti Village)"
Grjótagata 12 was the home of Laufey Jakobsdóttir, nicknamed "the grandmother of Grjótalþorp," from 1976 to 1995. Laufey was born on 25 September 1915 in Borgarfjörður, east Iceland. Her husband was Magnús B. Finnbogason (1911-93), a master builder, writer and inventor. They had eight children and many descendants. Laufey was passionate about social issues: she was one of the found-ers of the feminist Women's Alliance, and placed priority on women's rights in all that she did. She was an honorary member of the animal protection association, an advocate for elderly care, and was interested in the preservation of historic buildings, an active member of the architectural conservation group Torfusamtökin. Laufey wrote many newspaper and magazine articles, as well as a large number of poems. A book based on interviews with her, Lífsbók Laufeyjar (The Book of Laufey's Life), was published in 1992. Laufey always fought for the rights of the disempowered, and she is renowned for her work with young people in the city centre, for which she became known as "the grandmother of Grjótaþorp." Among her achievements was the opening of a public toilet in Grjótaþorp, where she worked long hours into
the nights, unpaid, so that the youngsters would have a safe haven. On 17 June 1996 she was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Icelandic Order of the Falcon. Laufey passed away 6 March 2004.
