Two-tiered terraces will flank either side of the main entrance to Montpelier, giving a greater presence to the mansion. The walkway up to the front door will also be extended, and serve (as) a guide to visitors toward the new overlook. The overlook will provide a view of Thomaston as well as a view to the location of the original Montpelier along the St. George River.
"His house is admirable situated, looking south, almost directly down Georges River, which makes a kind of bay, and salt water here. The river itself empties below his house. . . "Journal of the Reverend Paul Coffin,15 August 1796, about the originalMontpelier's location
Trees planted in rows as Knox had requested in his landscaping notes will be placed on either side of the terraces and of Montpelier as two allées extending back to the Oval Garden. The trees will be of varieties noted in his writings, such as ash, elm, and spruce trees.
