As seen on the right, the Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad Depot at Frostburg was constructed in 1891. The depot served as a passenger and freight station enroute between Cumberland, Maryland down the rich coal-mining region of Georges Creek to Piedmont, West Virginia. The "Old Depot" now serves as the terminus of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. Depicted on the left of this 1908 C&P Depot view is the Tunnel Hotel. The hotel was constructed about 1888. It was a stopover and provided inexpensive accommodations for those desiring a less "fashionable" hostelry. At times, the Tunnel Hotel was characterized by an unsavory reputation. In the early 1920s during Prohibition, and although officially vacant, the site maintained a large moonshining enterprise.
