This area shown (circa 1890) is in the rear of the Hermitage and provided a convenient, covered area for household activities. To Victorians there was a strong connection between homes and children. "It is not for ourselves alone but for the sake of our children that we should love to build our homes . . . beautifully and well. The young people are mostly at home; it is their storehouse for amusement, their opportunity for relaxation, their main resource . . . (and) gratification of their nascent perceptions of beautiful."
