Palmer grounds keeper James Rudd Sr. constructed the altar with stones brought from across the country and the Caribbean. Each morning Brown prayed before beginning her long day at the school.

The altar was a favorite place for students and faculty to enjoy the scenic beauty of the campus while relaxing and studying but also was used as a time-out area for students who did not follow Brown's strict rules.
