Two sections of Knap's Penna. Battery and six regiments of Geary's Division encamped here on evening of Uctober 28, 1863, and here attacked at midnight by Bratton's South Carolina Brigade, Longstreet's Corps. The battery held summit of knoll a few yards south - west of this point. The Infantry battle line enveloped position occupied by Battery in form of a horseshoe, centre facing north. The 137th N.Y. Infantry held the left of the line along a fence facing northerly and westerly. The 149th N.Y. Infantry were on the right of the line along railroad embankment, facing easterly with its left near this monument; the 78th N.Y. Infantry in reserve, occupied threatened positions alternately on extreme left and right during engagement which lasted three hours, the Confederates retiring.

Brig.-Gen. Geo. S. Greene was wounded and Col. David S. Ireland assumed of the Third Brigade during the battle.
