Near this site on November 7, 1864 General Sherman received orders from President Lincoln and General Grant to proceed with his plans to march his army from Atlanta to the sea. Thus, the infamous March to the Sea originated in Kingston. This action resulted in a new type of warfare known as total war, where cities, towns, farms, plantations, and civilians were considered targets to end the war.
