A mile north, at Eltham Landing on the Pamunkey River, Franklin's division of McClellan's army disembarked on May 6, 1862. The next morning the Union troops came in contact with the Confederates retiring toward Richmond. The Confederate wagon trains were in danger; but Gustavus W. Smith drove Franklin back to the river. The action occurred in this vicinity, May 7, 1862.
