" There are barracks in the town onthe north side, ninety feet square, built of tappy, covered by cypress shingles; and a handsometower over the gateway...."
London Magazine
October 23, 1747

At the time of the Spanish attack in 1742, about 200 British troops were stationedat Frederica. Some of the officers andmarried men lived in their own homes in or near town. Others lived camp-style inclapboard or thatched huts adjacent tothis site. The barracks that stood herecould accommodate more than 100 men.

The building took the form of a squarewith rooms surrounding an open parade.Walls were made with tabby one foot thick. Soldiers entered the barracks through agateway covered by a tower made ofdouble thick tabby. Fortunately, threewalls of this impressive tower remainstanding and have been stabilized by theNational Park Service.

During the 1742 Military campaign the barracksserved as a hospital, and as quarters forSpanish prisoners-of-war.
