Petty Officer Balch was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the WWI battle near Vierzy, France on 19 July 1918.

"While under intense machine-gun and high explosive shell fire for over 16 hours Petty Officer Balch at great personal risk, heroically treated wounded and fallen Marines."
