Whittlesley Villagers

Beginning around 1000, American Indians in northeastern
Ohio developed a distinct culture known archeologically as
the Whittlesley Tradition. They started building walls around
their small villages. (See illustration below.) Their pottery and
agriculture changed, too. Instead of having a complex trade
network, they relied on the local landscape.

Imagine what it was like to live in the long, multi-family homes
made of wooden poles. What kinds of vegetables did they raise
on the floodplain? (See nearby historical marker.) By the time
European people arrived in the early 1700's, these Whittleley
Tradition people had disappeared from the Cuyahoga Valley.
