This block is a pioneering effort at urban renewal made in the early 1920's by William Slone Coffin, heir to the W&J Sloane Furniture Company. To attract middle-class professionals, he renovated brick row houses built in the 1840's and 1850's and created a private community garden with low-walled plots opening into a central mall enclosed by their houses.
