The Eden, Wisconsin, native spent his entire 17-year career with the Brewers, finishing his tenure ranked third in franchise history in games (1,801) and plate appearances (6,787), trailing only Hall of Famers Robin Yount and Paul Molitor. His 1,696 hits and 726 runs ranked fourth in club history. On defense, "Gumby" finished among the top five A.L. second basemen in fielding percentage six times, and assists five times. Scored the winning run against the California Angels in the decisive game five of the 1982 ALCS to send the Brewers to their first World Series.
