1852-1920

Founded well before the advent of public education in
Nova Scotia, this school provided a classical and moral
education for the sons of well-to-do Maritimers. A few day
pupils attended, but most were boarders. From 1905 on,
girls were admitted. For a century Acacia Villa graduates
were leaders in public life and in every profession. The
main building stood until 1959, when it was blown down
in Hurricane Edna. Two local graduates of note were Sir
Frederick Borden of Canning, Minister of Defence and
Militia from 1896 to 1911, and his cousin, Sir Robert Borden
of Grand Pré, Prime Minister of Canada from 1911

to 1921.
