Johnson Division, - Longstreet's Corps

— Colonel John S. Fulton —

Johnson's Brigade
Johnson's Division - Longstreet's Corps.
Colonel John S. Fulton.
September 20, 1963, 2 P.M.

17th Tennessee, - Lieutenant Colonel Watt W. Floyd.
23d Tennessee, - Colonel R. H. Keeble.
25th Tennessee, - Lieutenant Colonel R. B. Snowden.
44th Tennessee, - Major G. M. Crawford.
York's Georgia Battery, - Lieutenant W. S. Everett.

Just before 2 o'clock Johnson's troops advanced from this line toward the northern crest. Gregg's Brigade was on the right and Johnson's on the left. Four Napoleon guns of Dent's Battery and three guns of York's were posted on Johnson's line and two of Dent's guns with Gregg's Brigade. The latter gained the main ridge about 400 yards in front of this position and turned the right of Brannan's line but was soon repulsed by the advance of Steedman's Division and fell back to this position. Supported on the right and left it again assaulted. The fighting continued with severity until sundown. After the first general attack the line was driven back to its guns but Johnson's troops and the right of Manigault again advanced. Soon after sundown Johnson followed the withdrawal of Steedman to the northern front of the main ridge and returning bivouacked near the crest.
