Upon this hill, during the war of 1812 stood an American fort
under the command of Major John Jermain and manned by the
ranks of the Fourth Regiment of the New York Artillery, tt
protected the port of Sag Harbor from foreign invaders.
In the early morning hours of 11 July 1813, a contingent of
British marines attempted a hostile occupation or the
surrounding area. They were driven back by the cannon fire
from this fort, American militia and the citizens or the village
of Sag Harbor, never to return.
Therefore, on this day, the 200th anntversary of that battle,
we dedicate this place to honor those who protected our
beloved village.
