363 York Ave.

The major new industry begun in Towanda in the 1880's was James H. Hawes' Toy Factory, located just north of the Historic District in a neighborhood still called Toytown. The Hawes firm became one of the Country's largest. About 1894, James' son and successor William built this Queen Anne home. It features scalloped shingles; recessed porch on the third story; wrap-around porch with turned columns; corbeled brick chimney; three full story gabled bays; bull's eye windows; and an octagonal tower with a tent roof. J. H. Pierce of Elmira, NY was the architect.
