Estanque y lavaderos

English translation:Water Storage Tank and Wash Basins The garden of the Royal College of Girls of Santa Rosa de Viterbo had similar functions to that of other convent buildings. It had fruit trees planted and vegetables and medicinal plants were grown for internal consumption, reducing outside contact in order to obtain this type of material. The order in which trees and vegetables were planted allowed the idea of a garden to be reproduced in the space, allowing educational activities such as meditation and catechism to take place in it. At the beginning of the 18th century, at the center of the orchard, a water storage tank was built for the irrigation of the same. Its dimensions allow us to calculate that at least 40,000 liters of water were stored inside it. This tank still retains its original construction: masonry walls more than one meter in height with its interior burnished in red, a staircase for maintenance and clay tiles placed in the form of petatillo

(a design similar to woven cloth). Next to the water storage tank, four wash basins and their respective smaller tanks were built. The drainage of the wash basins connected with the canal through pipes of glazed clay. The tank and the wash basins were probably served in remote times by the water from the canal, however evidence also shows that in its later stages they were fed from the nearby fountain by means of glazed clay pipes.
