Beehives in the Walled Garden

The hives in the garden are based on an 1890s design by William Broughton Carr. The wooden hives help the bees stay cool in summer and warm in winter. They are built in sections using frames, so the bees are less disrupted when the beekeepers extract the honey.
Hives are traditionally placed in orchards to improve pollination, helping the trees produce the fruit, as well as making honey. At the height of summer a bee colony can include up to 60,000 worker bees, supplying the queen bee, plus several hundred drones, who mate with the queen to produce eggs.
Bees can sting, please stay away from the hives.
