During the War of 1812, the British threatened the city of Washington. American troops attempted to defend the Nation's Capital at the Battle of Bladensburg in Prince George's County. Unfortunately, the effort failed and British troops marched into the city and burned the Capitol, Library of Congress, and the White House.

This 1814 map shows the positions of the American defenders, occupying positions across the river from the town and on both sides of the road to Washington (now Bladensburg Road).
