1 - Making a chalk-line on the log
· Cord reel with chalk
· "Twang" a chalked squaring cord on bark.
· Cross-section of log: gray shows hewn area
2 - "Scoring to the Line"
· Standing on the log with a long-handled felling axe and scoring deep vertical cuts
· Next the pieces between intervals are split off
3 - "Hewing to the Line
· Then standing beside the log
· Holding the broad axe with two hands, right hand foremost, left knee close to the log, the hewing is done.
4 - Finishing the Surface with the Adze
(If the logs were later covered, they would not be smoothed)
· Adze doesn't leave score marks
· Broad-axed beam has score marks
