The Captain H.H. Colle House is a center-hall style cottage. It dates from 1880 making it one of the oldest surviving structures from old Scranton (Pascagoula). Typical of home construction of this time period, the walls are horizontal wood boards covered with cheesecloth and wallpaper. This house is tangible evidence of the socio-economic impact of the Port of Pascagoula and its associated industries (railroad, lumber, seafood, and tourism); and that afforded residents the means to build houses such as the Colle home.

The Colle family business contributed to the growth of Pascagoula as a port city. Captain Herman H. Colle, Sr., with his partner A.F. Dantzler, purchased the tugboat Fox in 1878 and began operating the Pascagoula Towing Company after the federal government dredged the Pascagoula River in 1875.
