Much business was done in the 700 block and many prominent businessmen who worked here represented their fellows in government. Dr. George S. Long, former dentist and brother to governors Huey and Earl Long, served as a United States Congressman. T.C. Brister, hardware store owner, served in the State House of Representatives six terms. Jimmy Walker, furniture store owner, served on the State Wildlife and Fisheries Commission. P. Jean Pharis, attorney, has served as District Attorney and City Judge. Bates, Barron, Willet, McKenzie and Futrell, associated with insurance and real estate, had offices where the Bates Agency stands today. Elmo Futrell served as City Mayor. J.I. Barron, Sr., J.I. Barron, Jr., and D.C. Bates served as presidents of Rapides Parish School Boards and Darryl Willet served on the Parish library board.
