The Lone Sailor

The original bronze sculpture stands at the center of the United States Navy Memorial in Washington DC. In honor of the historical naval actions on Lake Champlain, the Navy Memorial Foundation approved placing The Lone Sailor at this first civilian location.

The figure by the United States Navy Memorial's official sculptor Stanley Blefeld is a composite of the Navy bluejacket past, present and future.

Pensive but alert, the sailor stands with seabag close, happy to return home yet looking to the water. The sailor never fully leaves the sea.

Dedicated June 2005
