This home was the residence of Mary Church Terrell, the first African American school board member in the United States, and Robert H. Terrell, the first African American municipal judge in the District of Columbia.

Construction of the Robert and Mary Church Terrell House is being supported in part by a "Save America's Treasures" grant administered by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior.
