The Treaty of Paris (1763) ended the French and Indian War in the American Colonies. France transferred to Britain all its rights to the mainland of America. East of the Mississippi River, excluding New Orleans and its environs. As a result. Britain acquired all of what is now Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana's Florida Parishes. Britain divided that area into British East and West Florida. In 1783, under the Treaty of Versailles, British West Florida - on a portion of which this monument is erected - was ceded to Spain. The Louisiana portion of the British West Florida remained a Spanish possession until 1810, when it became part of the United States of America.
