1969

According to Carl Schoening, Chief of Horticulture for the Parks in 1969, "We're always kind of fashioned Brookside to be a miniature Longwood Gardens. To Some extent. Not a copycat, but along those lines."

If you've ever visited Longwood Gardens, you know that its outdoor design is divided into many different garden "rooms." The idea of garden rooms can be seen here in the Formal Gardens, with the distinction between each successive garden area, starting with the Perennial Garden, moving through the Yew Garden, and onto Maple Terrace. Many of Longwood Gardens' individual garden areas are separated into similar rooms, but on the much larger scale. This design technique allows for many different types of garden design and display to "live" in close proximity, without conflicting aesthetically.
